Cyclic Living: The transformation Modern society often glorifies constant productivity, achievement and non-stop hustle. Progress is seen as a Linear Path. For years I found myself on this linear path and rather successful at it! The fact that I always showed up, tried to put in my 100%, multitasked and overachieved meant that I was successful in the eyes of society. And the linear path upwards seemed never to have an end. My life changed when I started thinking of my own definition of success and embracing the concept of Cyclic Living. Cyclic living is rooted in the idea that our lives, just like natural cycles, go through phases of growth, rest, and renewal. Progress is not linear, it’s Cyclic. This paradigm shift has transformed my way of life, leading me to embrace a more balanced, fulfilling and sustainable way of living. Achieving holistic wellness and Balance Cyclic living draws inspiration from the cycles found in nature: the changing seasons, the lunar phases, the daily cycle, and the rhythmic rise and fall of tides. By aligning our lives with these natural patterns, we learn from nature and this fosters holistic wellness. It teaches us humility and how everything in nature is interconnected. Through its cycles, nature allows us to come up with our daily, monthly and seasonal rituals to achieve balance and return to my pursuits with renewed energy and clarity . Breath as a Cycle Just because you are breathing, does not mean you are breathing correctly. Our breath is also a cycle - a cycle of Inhale and Exhale. Being mindful of this life giving cycle can create tremendous clarity of mind. Understanding yourself better One of the most powerful aspects of cyclic living is its recognition of our personal cycles. We are all unique due to the energy that we are made up of. We have times when we feel capable of tackling challenges head-on, as well as moments when we require rest and self-care. By listening to our bodies and minds, we can tailor our activities to align with these cycles. This approach liberates us from the guilt associated with taking breaks or being less productive. It also helps us from burning out through constant drive and passion. We learn that self-care is not selfish, but rather a vital aspect of maintaining overall well-being. Personally, Cyclic living has not only changed my way of life but also my perspective on success, productivity, and overall well-being. I have learned to appreciate the beauty in both growth and stillness. This approach has empowered me to listen to my body, mind, and intuition, ultimately leading me to a more authentic and fulfilling life journey. - Blog: Discipline & Consistency | YAMINI NAIK
A Balanced Approach to Discipline & Consistency If you are human, chances are that you find yourself grappling with the challenge of being disciplined and consistent, especially when it comes to wellness and fitness goals! In the modern world, it often appears that everyone has their act together, showcasing their triumphs and achievements. Who wants to post those moments when they're simply lounging on the couch, right? I've lost count of the times I've been asked questions like, "Do you practice yoga everyday?" or "You must be incredibly fit since you do yoga daily," or even "Running every day is impressive!". So, why is it that many of us stumble when it comes to maintaining discipline and consistency? Having observed my yoga students, coaching clients, friends and of course myself, I have noticed a common mis conception: People often equate discipline and consistency with the idea of doing the SAME THING with the SAME INTENSITY every single day. Due to this people either fall into the trap of constant achievement, often leading to boredom, burn out or injury. Or they are consistently inconsistent, leading to self doubt and regret. To achieve our desired results, we do not need to do something every single day with the same intensity. In fact, in many cases, adhering to a rigid daily routine can do more harm than good. The answer lies in finding the BALANCE Nature itself is in a constant state of change and evolution, and so are we. The key is to become more attuned to these changes. Are you aware that some days your body feels agile and strong, while on others, it may feel less responsive and fatigued? Are you in tune with your emotional fluctuations, understanding that some days you may be worried, stressed, or sad, while others bring happiness and serenity? So how can you find your balance when trying to be disciplined and consistent? Setting clear and realistic health goals is important, but understanding the true intention behind is the key. Write down your weekly, monthly and yearly intentions - WHY do you want to achieve your particular goal? Choose fun paths: There are many ways to achieve your goal if your intention is clearer. Health and Wellness are an essential part of life, but we also have other parts to our life like our community and relationships, our work and responsibilities. How can you mix these worlds ? Maybe go running with your child, walk with your dogs, dance with your friends. Gym is not the only way! Find a community: Group energy is an incredible force to either push you if you are slacking or calm you down if you are over pushing. Be disciplined by showing up everyday, but honour your body’s needs for that day. This is where cyclic living comes in! Get attuned to your breath cycle and the cycle’s in nature - the sun cycle, the moon cycle and the seasonal cycles. Be consistent by staying true to the intention of your goal. Detach from the result of your action. And above all do not forget to Enjoy the journey! It's not just about mindlessly repeating the same actions; it's about listening to your needs and adjusting accordingly. Remember, the path to self-improvement is a journey filled with peaks and valleys, and that's what makes it beautiful. You have got this! - Blog: Yoga Self Practice | YAMINI NAIK
Become your own Yoga teacher Everything in nature is constantly changing or evolving. And so are we. But are you aware of this every day? Some days the body feels flexible and capable, and on other days it feels stiff and tired. Having a regular self-practice routine can help you scan your body and give it what it needs for the day. Many of us either lack motivation or have no idea what to do as a yoga self- practice when there is no teacher or video to guide us. If that is your case, read on! ELEMENTS OF A SELF PRACTICE: In my methodology I propose 3 simple elements of a self-practice: CENTERING – MOVEMENT - CALMING 1. Start with CENTERING your FOCUS When we wake up, our mind is calm and empty of thoughts. However, we very easily and quickly fill it up (for example by looking at our phone!). Try to not look at your phone or emails and get on to your mat after you wake up. Start by CENTERING yourself by just observing your breath; inhaling and exhaling with a count (atleast 5 times) Exhale must always be double of the inhale. Rub your palms together, place them on your eyes, open your eyes and get yourself ready for the next step. 2. MOVEMENT through SURYANAMASKAR “Surya” in Hindi means Sun and “Namaskar” means salutation. The sun is the source of life for all nature on our planet, including us. Bowing to the sun that rises every morning, symbolizes acknowledging the gift of life we get every morning and taking in the strength of the sun to remove inertia and replace with energy to make the day count. 1. Start in Mountain Pose or TADASANA , feet together, shoulders rolled back and palms facing forward 2. Inhale to join palms, raise hands, back bend or ARDHA CHAKRASANA 3. Exhale to tilt pelvic and fold forward, UTTANASANA, slight bend in the knee keeping back straight 4. Inhale to step left foot back into, knee down, hands raising up, palms joined into ANJANEYASANA or Low lunge 5. HOLD BREATH, bring both pals down, step both feet back into Plank, PALAKASANA 6. Exhale to shift weight forward, bringing knees, chest and chin down into ASHTANGA NAMASKAR 7. Inhale to roll shoulders back, chest coming forward into Cobra or BHUJANGASANA 8. Exhale to push the hips up to the sky, flatten the back into Down-dog or ADHO MUKHA SVANASANA 9. Inhale to step the left leg forward, right knee down, hands raising up, palms joined into ANJANEYASANA or Low lunge 10. Exhale bringing both feet together, palms on the side of the feet into Forward fold or UTTANASANA 11. Inhale raising hands up , slight back bend or ARDHA CHANDRASANA 12. Exhale to bring the hands towards your sides, palms facing forward in Mountain pose or TADASANA How many times should I do a SURYANAMASKAR? The answer is how many ever times your body needs it, and the time you have given your pace that day. Go as fast or slow as you need but do every movement with INTENTION. You can try to do at least 8 rounds of SURYANAMASKAR to have a complete practice and on some days in the year you could try 108 rounds! 3. Finish your practice with CALMING your MIND through meditation. Try to focus on your breath, observe your thoughts, let them come and go. Listen and respect your body every day as it is. Watch it grow with your daily practice. Try not to let your ego or comparison dictate your self-practice. There are no end goals in yoga. It is just you and your body, CENTERING, MOVING and CALMING while enjoying the journey.
